2003 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother, more comfortable, more convenient. introductionford has launched an all-new expedition. This second-generation model shares almost nothing with last year's model. It's packed with new features, but the biggest improvement is its ride quality, a benefit of a new independent rear suspension.  when i last drove the expedition, it was for a long comparison test with one of its prime competitors. My fatigued co-tester was eager to trade vehicles with me. Indeed, keeping the giant sport utility, with its darty steering, sloppy suspension and rough ride, on the straight and narrow was tough duty. A driver could comfortably stay behind the wheel for the entire trip without fatigue, and the expedition would have a great shot at beating competitors in a comparison test. That's how much better the 2003 model is over its predecessor. Ride and handling are greatly improved, the steering is more responsive and more stable on the open road.  new features for the 2003 expedition include a power third-row seat that disappears with the press of a button, leaving a large, perfectly flat cargo area. The interior is all new. A small center seat on the second row slides forward to give front-seat parents access to a small child. Safety is enhanced with a lower front bumper, an optional safety curtain designed to protect occupants in a rollover, adjustable pedals, a tire-pressure monitor, and advanced electronics designed to help the driver maintain control.  the ford expedition and lincoln navigator full-size sport utilities were originally introduced as 1997 models for people who needed three rows of seats like a minivan but wanted to trade the soccer-mom image for the rugged, outdoorsy appearance of an suv. At that time, few competitors existed, primarily the chevrolet suburban and other full-size utilities from general motors. Toyota has since added the sequoia, and gm has launched additional iterations of its full-size and almost full-size sport utilities.  . lineupa choice of engines is offered in the expedition: the standard 4. 6-liter v8 rated at 232 horsepower and the 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 291 horsepower. The xlt is equipped well.  eddie bauer adds front captain's chairs with two tone-leather and 6-way driver power, automatic climate control with rear a/c, a premium sound system, arizona beige lower body side cladding, floor console, overhead console, 11 cup holders, fog lights, privacy glass with power flip-open rear windows, satin nickel grille, homelink, electrochromic mirror, power outside heated mirrors with memory, security approach lamps and integrated turn signals, power adjustable pedals with memory, power driver's seat with memory, reverse sensing system, black non-illuminated running boards.  expedition prices run a wide range: xlt 2wd 30,555); xlt 4wd 33,425); eddie bauer 2wd 37,050); eddie bauer 4wd 41,195). Numerous packages are available for the xlt. A fully loaded eddie bauer edition goes for nearly $45,000.  an fx4 off-road package 4,185) is available on xlt models that features distinctive exterior cues that give it a more rugged appearance, including tubular steel running boards, foglamps, an fx4 badge on the liftgate. Unique 17-inch chromed steel wheels and all-terrain tires complement special shocks tuned for off-road performance.  . walkaroundin spite of all the changes underneath, there is little to visually distinguish the new 2003 ford expedition over the 2002 model. A new expedition owner may be unhappy when the neighbors don't notice they've traded the old one in for the new model. Then again, maybe not. Auto companies have found it doesn't always pay to mess with winning formulas.  with roughly the same overall dimensions as before, the new expedition looks bigger and bolder than its predecessor. The track has been widened nearly two inches to give it a well-planted stance. The standard wheels increased to 17 inches for a bolder look. The roof height is lower. Bumpers are integrated more smoothly into the overall design. Previously, the expedition's interior was virtually identical to the lincoln navigator and the ford f-150 pickup trucks upon which they are based. In this new generation, however, distinctions have been made. The navigator is far fancier than the expedition, which, while quite refined, has a more outdoorsy, everyday workhorse ambiance.  the ford expedition's interior is dressed up with a metallic satin finish on such items as the rings that surround the vents and door handles. Shapes are round, and controls are hefty for an easy grip.  storage space is generous. The front center console available in some versions of the expedition can fit a small laptop computer. The console has a slot to hold pens and a palm pilot or other pdas. The lighter colors used for the upholstery give it a lighter, more car-like air.  the interior features a number of clever and useful innovations, some of them industry firsts. The third-row seat splits 60-40. Push a button on the wall of the cargo area, and one side powers down. Hold down the other button, and the other side powers down. The honda odyssey minivan introduced the fold-flat third-row seat, which is accomplished simply in a non high-tech fashion by pulling a couple of straps. The power-down buttons are more convenient. One side did not power up without a hand because the headrest didn't retract fully, creating too snug a fit against the second row seatback. We assume this has been addressed in production.  when folded down, the cargo floor is perfectly flat, in contrast to some expedition competitors who say the floor folds flat but actually slant. The flat floor combined with the flaps that cover the gap where the seats hinge make it easy to slide objects in and out. It proved invaluable during a variety of typical weekend chores. We changed the expedition repeatedly from a people hauler to a cargo hauler and back again with just a simple push of the button. After dumping that off, a pack of teenagers piled in to go to a punk rock concert. The third row is comfortable enough for a couple of full-size adults. The next day we picked up a high-backed wicker chair from the furniture store.  the second row features a clever feature ford claims is another industry first. The bench seat splits roughly into thirds. The middle section moves forward by about 11 inches, almost abutting it to the back of the front center console. That gives front-seat parents access to a small child or a child in a safety seat. The small center seatback can also be folded down and used as a work surface. The two outboard second-row seats fold easily forward for access to the third-row seat.  the expedition can be outfitted with enough safety equipment to create a cocoon inside in case of an accident. Dual-stage front airbags are standard. The expedition is now outfitted with an independent rear suspension. The suspension, combined with a stiffer chassis, gives the expedition dramatically improved ride and handling. It makes the expedition feel far smaller than the large vehicle it is.  ford introduced a similar independent suspension on the 2002 explorer, but it's more common to cars than trucks. The efficient packaging of the independent rear suspension made it possible for ford engineers to accomplish a fold-flat third-row seat.  yet, the expedition doesn't sacrifice its truck-like capabilities. It still carries heavy loads and tows trailers and boats with the best of them.  another major mechanical improvement to the expedition was the switch to the more car-like rack-and-pinion steering system. The change significantly improves steering response. The new expedition requires only small inputs to the steering wheel, to which it answers immediately.  . summarythe all-. 2008 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Haul people, tow boats. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, the explorer competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, new suspension, and new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  all explorers offer a smooth ride and decent handling for such big, heavy vehicles. The interiors are pleasant, with only oddly designed door panels to complain about. With five, six, or seven-passenger seating configurations, customers can outfit their explorers to fit their passenger and cargo carrying needs.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,310 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,531 pounds of payload.  explorer has earned the best possible impact protection rating in the federal government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact, according to the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model year new car assessment program. Ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2008, ford adds new standard and optional features. Side curtain airbags are standard on 2008 models, voice activation is added to the optional navigation system, and top-line limited models get standard power adjustable pedals and a universal garage door opener. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2008 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,755), xlt 4wd 28,050), eddie bauer 2wd 28,100), eddie bauer 4wd 30,395), limited 2wd 31,870), and limited 4wd 34,165). All are available with the standard 4. 0-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission or an optional 4. 6-liter v8 with a six-speed automatic 1,295). The audiophile stereo 510) and sirius satellite radio 195) with six-month subscription are available separately. Power retracting running boards are optional for eddie bauer and limited 695). Later in the model year, 20-inch wheels, capless fueling, and ford sync will be offered.  seating choices include a manually folding third-row seat 875) on xlt and eddie bauer, standard on limited. A power-folding third row is available on eddie bauer 1,370) and limited 495). The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  safety features standard on. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. The colors and trims are elegant and tasteful, and the use of metallic trim is not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two captain's chairs with fold-down armrests and a center console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise. The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display. For 2008, it can now be operated via voice commands.  ford's sync communications and entertainment system, due late in the 2008 model year, can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions.  the rear-seat entertainment system's drop-down screen seems small a bit small. When in position for viewing, the video screen combines with the rear head restraints to block the driver's view to the rear. Outward visibility elsewhere is good, with less obstruction than expected from the thick c-pillars.  we don't care for the door handles. Ford designed the interior door panels so the armrests and door pulls would supplement the impact protection hardware built into the door's innards. Thus, the armrests and door pulls were separated, with the pulls positioned below the armrests. This poor ergonomic positioning makes i.

2004 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling suv. introductionford explorer is the modern american station wagon. Ford sells more than 400,000 explorers a year, making it the best-selling suv and the sixth best-selling vehicle in america, and it's held these titles for a dozen years. Though quite capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers, like most suvs, spend their entire lives shuttling people and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, which is part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It's capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used. Part of the reason for this is that the explorer benefits from a superb five-speed automatic transmission.  safety features abound: anti-lock brakes come standard, and side-curtain air bags, designed to provide rollover protection, are optional and highly recommended. Ford's advancetrac electronic stability system is available for all xlt, eddie bauer, and limited models, providing improved traction and safety. The current model rides on a wider track and a longer wheelbase, giving it a more solid, more stable stance. Its newly developed independent rear suspension gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  new car test drive chose the explorer as the best all-around sport-utility vehicle for 2003. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All models come standard with the five-speed automatic. Xlt comes with aluminum alloy wheels, a new chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather trimmed upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Nbx includes a yakima loadwarrior roof rack, which features a cargo basket made of heavy-duty steel, two-tone bumpers, body cladding, wheel-lip moldings, step bars, front tow hooks, and 17-inch aluminum wheels with p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. The nbx interior is trimmed with unique seat fabric, special rubber floormats, and a soft liner for the cargo area with a storage bag.  eddie bauer 33,100) and limited 33,975) come with leather trimmed seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, 290-watt six-cd stereo with seven speakers, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, 17-inch satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a chrome grille and unique 17-inch chrome wheels. The limited model is available in new ceramic white tri-coat.  options include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), power-adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and a power moonroof 800). Located in the roof, it is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impact or rollover accidents. The safety canopy is designed to improve side-impact protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly reco. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet, it clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it, and few will notice it at all. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. Handsome pecan wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handles add to the light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. The leather-trimmed upholstery is attractive. However, we wish ford would have stitched leather all the way around to the inside edge of the seat bottom instead of using carpet there to save money.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons that control them are mounted in an awkward location, on the sides of seats. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the seat-height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that.

2000 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's favorite suv. introductionthe ford explorer is easily the best-selling sport-utility in america. Nearly 2. 8 million suvs were sold in 1998 and some 425,000 of them were ford explorers. About 430,000 explorers were sold in 1999. The explorer outsold its nearest competitor nearly two-to-one.  what's the significance of all these numbers? Simply this: ford must be doing something right to sell so many explorers. The xls includes such niceties as power mirrors, locks and windows, an am/fm stereo cassette audio system, and aluminum wheels. With 4-wheel drive, the xls starts at $25,170.  explorer drivers can move up to the $27,185 xlt, which adds fog lights, privacy glass and interior trim items; the 4x4 xlt lists for $29,150.  further up the explorer hierarchy is the eddie bauer edition for $31,740 with two-wheel drive. This explorer adds 16-inch wheels, automatic temperature controls, electrochromatic rearview mirror, upgraded audio and trim items, including leather upholstery. The eddie bauer 4x4 starts at $33,705, or $34,120 with all-wheel drive. The limited is the top of the explorer line, with more leather plus simulated woodgrain, special wheels and exterior trim, and retails for $31,995 for 4x2, $33,960 for 4x4, $34,375 for awd. walkaroundjust about everything has changed on the explorer since its 1991 introduction. Still, if asked to describe a sport-utility vehicle, most people could save time by just showing a picture of the explorer.  the xlt is the typical explorer, well equipped but not overly fancy or too expensive. It features a bright front and rear bumper with an integrated rub strip. Its compound headlamp array includes the headlights plus parking lights, turn signals and side marker lights in a single aero-curved assembly set into the bright grille surround. The grille itself is simple, with a large crossbar decorated with the ford blue oval badge and three smaller vertical bars. The rear bumper echoes the front in appearance, but comes standard with a 3500-pound trailer towing capacity. Tri-color taillights and a liftgate with a flip-open rear window finish off the rear.  the explorer uses an independent short/long arm front suspension with torsion bars and a live axle mounted on two-stage variable-rate leaf springs at the rear. A 4. 0-liter pushrod v6 is standard in the xls and can be upgraded to the 4. 0-liter overhead-cam v6 for those wanting more performance. These engines come with a choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The xlt and more expensive models, however, come standard with a 5. 0-liter overhead-valve v8 with a 4-speed automatic. The 215-horsepower v8 cranks out 288 foot-pounds of torque. Ford made its trailer towing package standard on all v8-equipped explorers. interiorthe inside of the ford explorer looks like america's living room, which is appropriate, considering that so many americans spend so much time there. The front passengers get a pair of comfy captain's chairs, covered in a premium cloth for the xlt. Big doors make access easy, though the xlt doesn't have the running boards standard on the eddie bauer and limited models. The dash features full instrumentation in a neatly laid out nacelle. The radio and hvac (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are centered on the dash in a pod; that pod also houses a knob that controls the 4wd operation. The audio and cabin temperature controls are easy enough to use though we'd prefer an old-fashioned twist knob to control station tuning on the radio. The xlt has a handy center console/arm rest.  front seat side-impact airbags are optional. Considering the poor rear vision suvs have when backing up, this rear sensing system is an important safety option. driving impressionthe explorer is easier to drive on a daily basis than the bigger suvs in the ford stable. It is far more nimble in crowded parking lots with narrow spaces or on forest roads with tight switchbacks. If a small turning circle is paramount, the 2-door is a better choice, at 34. 7 feet curb to curb, though the 4-door explorer manages a fairly nimble 37. 3 feet.  the v6 is the most popular engine. But the 5. 0-liter v8 assures a certain command of the road with an ability to accelerate with all but the sportiest of automobiles, handy for merging or passing. It's the best choice for doing any towing, with reserve power for climbing hills and bucking headwinds. But the explorer is indeed a truck. It's responsive to its rack-and-pinion steering, reacting smartly to a turn of the wheel, but there's no denying the high-mounted center of gravity and overall mass of the vehicle. It handles like a truck. The explorer's relatively heavy tires and live rear axle arrangement also work against a luxury car ride. The explorer shares the cargo-hauling capability of the station wagons of yore, but it adds ground clearance and, in 4x4 versions, the promise of all-season mobility.
